The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2011
Superintendent, Dallas Independent School District
Pre-Academy Role: Superintendent, Harrison School District, Colorado
Post-Academy Role: Superintendent, Dallas Independent School District
Educating at-risk students is the most important work of our time. Public education needs more than incremental reform; it needs a transformation. As a life-long public servant, I hope to continue to provide the vision, leadership and tough decision making required to transform our school systems.
In April 2012, Mike Miles was named Superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District. Previously, he was superintendent of the Harrison School District in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Before that role, Miles was committed to public service as a teacher and principal. As an instructional leader and professional developer, he helped teachers and administrators across the country to improve instruction and raise student achievement.
Prior to his involvement in education, Milles served the public interest as a statesman and soldier. He was a Diplomat to Poland and Russia at the end of the Cold War, finishing his State Department work as the Special Assistant to the Ambassador to Russia. Previously, he served in the U.S. State Department as a Soviet analyst and member of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Miles also was an officer in the Army Ranger Battalion, where his military experience included leading counter terrorism training operations.
