The Broad Residency 2009-2011

During my time as teacher in the Mississippi Delta, Cedric Mitchell was one of my brightest, yet lowest-performing students. Like most of his peers in the Delta, Cedric attended segregated, chronically low-performing public schools, with the majority of students reading and writing three and a half grade levels behind their higher-income peers. Despite the numerous barriers to a quality education, Cedric showed signs of success in my classroom. Partly due to my high expectations for him, efforts to work with his mother and other teachers, and a little luck, Cedric performed well in social studies and significantly improved his writing skills. I am thrilled to be a part of the Broad Residency to help the millions of students like Cedric in schools across the country have an opportunity for a great education.

Larkin Tackett served as Promise Neighborhoods Lead/Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Education during his Residency.
