Urban School Districts

Urban school districts often serve hundreds of thousands of families. They have multi-billion-dollar budgets, thousands of employees and hundreds of facilities. The sheer size of these systems provides the opportunity to make significant impact on behalf of the communities they serve.

What role do urban school districts play in education?

  • Manage and operate schools within budget
  • Develop curricula and provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful after graduation
  • Set policy for areas not covered by federal and state laws and regulations and interpret policy within established guidelines
  • Determine allocation of funds between the central office and schools as well as across schools
  • Set policy and protocols for teacher hiring and evaluation in alignment with federal and state policies

Public Charter School Networks

In exchange for autonomy from district rules controlling things like curriculum, instruction and operations, charter schools are authorized to produce results for students and families. The charter networks with which we partner are all nonprofit organizations with high student achievement and plans to replicate their success. They typically offer more entrepreneurial environments with smaller teams than found in city school districts.

What role do charter school networks play in education?

  • Manage and operate schools within budget
  • Develop curricula and provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful after graduation
  • Set policy for areas not covered by federal and state laws and regulations and interpret policy within established guidelines
  • Execute alternative models for instruction and operations
  • Determine allocation of funds between the central office and schools as well as across schools
  • Set policy and protocols for teacher hiring and evaluation in alignment with federal and state policies

State Education Agencies

State education agencies set policy and provide financial resources for all public schools in their respective states. As a result, their impact on urban education can be dramatic.

What role do state education agencies play in education?

  • Set policy for areas not covered by federal law and regulations and interpret policy within established guidelines
  • Establish content standards, performance standards, accountability frameworks and measurement tools as well as graduation requirements
  • Administer student assessments and report results
Set funding levels and regulations for local education agencies as well as budget and expenditure reporting requirements
  • Fund teacher preparation programs and establish rules and regulations for teacher staffing, including certification and licensing
