The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2011
Former Chief Transformation Officer, Wake County Public School System, North Carolina
Education is the key to providing hope for a better future for the youth in our country. Every child, regardless of race or economic circumstances, needs to have access to an equitable, quality education system with effective teachers and other caring adults who are focused and committed to that child’s success.
In September 2011, Judy Peppler was appointed to the position of chief transformation officer for the Wake County Public School System in Raleigh, North Carolina, a district that serves over 137,000 students. She previously served as the state president for Qwest Communications in Oregon and worked in the telecommunications industry for over 23 years.
At Qwest, Peppler was responsible for the company’s Oregon operations, including oversight and integration of sales, marketing, network, regulatory, media and legislative strategies. She negotiated significant regulatory reforms and advanced key legislative priorities for the company that have provided increased market flexibility and financial strength. Prior to her appointment to the Oregon post, Peppler advanced through numerous positions at Qwest and its predecessor companies, including network operations, human resources, lobbying and foundation, media and community relations.
Peppler also has been involved in education issues for a number of years in the Portland community. She served on the board of the Portland Schools Foundation and helped lead the efforts on Cradle to Career, a community wide partnership bringing together educators, elected officials and business and community leaders at all levels to develop and maintain systems and strategies to maximize student potential and achievement from cradle to career.
