Assistant director, recruitment and selection
Working to ensure all students have the same opportunities to fulfill their potential is a personal mission of Lesley Moreno. The daughter of immigrants, she was the first in her family to learn to speak English, and recalls her classmates teasing her for speaking with an accent. Her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Riboli, stressed to Lesley and her family that being bilingual was an asset, and encouraged her to be proud of her first language.
When Lesley began college, she quickly realized that although she had taken AP and honors classes, classmates from wealthier school districts had been exposed to much more content than she had, giving them an advantage. Rather than giving up, Lesley threw herself into her studies. After graduating from California State University Long Beach, she began volunteering as a mentor to first-year and transfer students at her alma mater. She also co-chaired a group that organized fundraisers and volunteer opportunities for employees at her first job.
Joining The Broad Center as operations associate, Lesley supported all logistical aspects of the recruitment and selection process. During her time with the Residency, she helped the team grow to its largest cohort ever. She went on to support the Alumni and Network Impact team, ensuring that alumni had access to events and services to develop their skills and careers. Today, Lesley serves as a member of the team that identifies and cultivates potential Broad Residents to create equitable schools in every community, so no student experiences the inequities she did.
How do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time I enjoy having long conversations with my sisters. I’m the oldest of four and always love to hear what is going on in each one of their lives. They are strong, funny and smart young women. I admire them so much.
What project/s and/or results are you most proud of from your work at TBC?
I am most proud of helping pilot our first summer associate internship. We are exposing bright, first-generation college students from the communities we serve to our work and different career paths in the social impact space. It’s inspiring to see the full circle.
What others say about Lesley:
“Lesley is gracious with her time and knowledge. She is a great resource for all my questions and continuously provides support and encouragement.”
