The Broad Academy 2002
A successful superintendent must possess the skills to facilitate the school board’s working toward a common district vision, focusing on its primary duty of setting policy, while allowing the superintendent and the administration to manage the district.
From his start as a classroom teacher, Abe Saavedra has worked to improve opportunities and outcomes for students in Texas. He was superintendent in Corpus Christi and Houston, where he was known nationally for leading a system that made impressive gains in student achievement and school improvement. Abe retired from Houston Independent School District in 2010, but the pull of education was too strong for him to stay away. He’s now back serving students as a superintendent, this time in South San Antonio Independent School District.
