The Broad Residency 2019-2021

As educators, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to build partnerships across a diverse group of individuals to make more informed decisions about our education system that prioritize our youth. As we undertake new and ongoing challenges in our public education system, we must deepen our understanding of education issues and expand our toolbox of student-centered solutions that are both impactful and responsive to the needs of the communities that we serve. I am eager to build lasting and meaningful partnerships with others to ensure that every child has access to an equitable and enriching educational experience.

As a Broad Resident, Ariel Murphy serves as the chief of staff at the Louisiana Department of Education, managing day-to-day operations for over 500 department staff. She leads the team responsible for internal and external stakeholder communications, coordinates the collaboration of the executive team to ensure alignment to the agency’s strategic plan and goals, and advises the State Superintendent of Education on key policy and organizational decisions. Before joining the Louisiana Department of Education in 2017, Ariel worked for the U.S. Department of Education in the Obama administration where she supported the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and the implementation of the My Brother’s Keeper initiative. Ariel began her career in education as an upper-elementary and middle school English teacher at Uncommon Schools through Teach For America. She earned a bachelor’s degree in government and a minor in public policy with a focus on education from Dartmouth College, a master’s degree in teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education, and a master’s degree in politics and education from Teachers College Columbia University.
