The Broad Academy 2004

Equality of opportunity and the elegantly simple notion that success in life should be determined, not by birth, but by merit remains fundamental to our national identity and purpose. Meant to serve as the great equalizer, public education far too often leaves many children woefully unprepared to compete as equals in an increasingly demanding world.

Throughout his career, Chris Cerf has been widely known as a leader with a laser-like focus on what’s best for students. A former associate counsel during the Clinton administration, he pushed for tighter reporting and measurement of student achievement as well as aggressive support for New Jersey’s most struggling schools as state commissioner of education. As superintendent in Newark, he oversaw the district’s portfolio of traditional, vocational-technical, magnet and charter schools to ensure student success no matter where they enrolled. During his tenure, the district posted gains in graduation rates and student performance and narrowed gaps in achievement and opportunity.
