The Broad Academy 2016-2017
The Broad Residency 2004-2006
For many of our young people, high expectations are not universal. Too many of our schools do not set a high-enough bar, and too many make excuses for why a certain child is not "college material."
After college, Jeremy worked as a teacher for Teach For America in New York City. He then went to business school and became a star strategy consultant for IBM. His heart, however, always was in education. This deep-rooted desire to give back is what compelled him to apply to The Broad Residency.
Although I loved the intellectual challenges and my peer group at IBM, I wanted to take my skills and experience and put them to a higher use,” says Chiappetta. “I decided to return to the education space in order to provide to others what my family gave to me. I believe that a great education is a path to lifelong success.”
Making an Immediate Impact
After the Residency, Chiappetta served as an assistant principal at Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School in Providence Public School District in Rhode Island. He founded the school-wide Perry-to-College program, in which students “applied” to colleges and toured campuses including Harvard, Brown, Providence College and Bryant University. The program helped Perry meet its academic accountability targets in all three years of Chiappetta’s tenure and led to a 250-percent increase in the number of Perry students admitted to Providence’s only public exam-entry high school.
In 2010, Chiappetta was appointed as executive director of Rhode Island Mayoral Academies Blackstone Valley — a network of tuition-free public schools chartered by the Rhode Island Department of Education. The academies provide young people with a truly transformational educational experience that prepares 100 percent of them for success in college and the world beyond.
In his first five years, Chiappetta plans to grow Blackstone Valley Prep from an inaugural cohort of 76 students to over 1,000. He wants to expand his team to 200 teachers and leaders who are urgent about closing student achievement gaps. He is striving to cultivate scholars, independent thinkers and respectful, enthusiastic soon-to-be-adults who are ready to take on the world.
“I am most proud of the innovation of our school model — specifically the marriage of rigorous high-expectations with a truly socio-economically diverse school community,” notes Chiappetta. “Our school is serving families living in extreme poverty as well as children of doctors and lawyers. All are excited to join one another on this path to college.”
