The Broad Residency 2018-2020

For me, leading Marines provided vivid evidence of the impact of our country’s public education system on the lives of most Americans. I see a career in public education as a way to continue to serve my country and have a lasting effect on its future.

John Powell is director of financial management at Uncommon Schools, working to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of the network’s schools in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Prior to joining The Broad Residency, John was a consultant and liaison officer for the Marine Corps’ Center for Advanced Operational Culture Learning, where he managed cultural and language training for military units preparing to deploy overseas. Before that, John served as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps, leading teams on counterinsurgency operations during two deployments to Afghanistan. John earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina, and master’s degrees in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a master’s degree in business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
