The Broad Academy 2004
I have dedicated my entire professional life to public service — through service to the nation in the Army and now a demanding leadership position in K-12 education. Urban districts serving large numbers of children in poverty face high-stakes challenges daily and must have bold leaders who embrace change and seize opportunities to implement creative solutions.
After a 25-year career in the U.S. Army that culminated in serving as commanding officer of Fort Belvoir, Thomas Brady continued his public service by bringing his considerable management experience to public schools, initially as a chief operating officer in Fairfax County, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. He then was superintendent of Providence Public Schools, where he led improvements in student achievement and drafted a plan for turning around the city’s lowest-performing schools. Now as director of the Department of Defense Education Activity, Tom brings that same focus on improving student outcomes to the more than 78,000 students served in public schools around the world.
